If you are a graduating senior from the state of Montana, you have probably heard of the Governor’s Postsecondary Scholarship. It is the most sought after scholarship in the great state of Montana and this fund can be used in either public or private colleges located within the state. This scholarship was set up to award students that have financial need a fund that will help them through college. The student that receives this award cannot have financial assistance from a parent that covers all of their financial needs.
There are certain qualifications to receive this scholarship. If you are male you must sign up for selective service before the award is given. The student cannot have been awarded another scholarship through Title IV of Montana and does not owe any money to the Federal student loan program. The person applying for this scholarship has to be a resident of Montana and cannot be incarcerated in an adult or juvenile penal system. The winner of this scholarship has to use the award within nine months of receiving the award or they will lose the chance to spend the money toward their education.
While in school, the student has to maintain at least a 2.5 GPA and has to complete thirty hours of school within that school year. The application should be placed in order by the first of March each year. That is a solid deadline and no applications will be accepted after that. There are 485 scholarships given out annually and the average award of each scholarship ranges between one and two thousand dollars. The money must be spent on tuition or books and no amount of the fund is allowed to be spent on living expenses.
Though there are many types of scholarships in the state of Montana, this scholarship is the flagship for all the other state scholarships. Once a student lands an award with this scholarship the application and the awards of other scholarships soon fall in line if the student applies themselves at school and maintains a good GPA. Any Montana student can apply at their schools transition office or at the college they are attending now. If you are in college now, your current GPA will be the deciding factor and not your high school record. Native Americans from Montana may apply even if they have already been awarded a Native American Scholarship from the state, but these applicants need to apply a month earlier for consideration.
