What You Need to Know When Applying For Financial Aid

For most students, their financial aid package is the first loan they have ever applied for. It can be a difficult process, but if you have the necessary items on hand, it will be much easier. Each financial aid institution will have different requirements, but here is a quick list of the basics that you will need to complete any application.

1. Your parents tax returns. The requirements to be eligible for financial aid are typically based on your parent’s income. Whether you are applying for a school loan or a federal loan, they will need to make less than the maximum amount of allowable income. Ask your parents for a copy of their latest tax return and then keep it filed away in a safe place. You’ll be able to get it quickly then when you need it for an application.

2. Your employment records. Most financial institutions will want to have an idea of your financial stability. Producing employment records can help you present a professional image to the loan committee. You will need to have copies of any tax returns that you have personally filed, as well as payment stubs and a timeline of your past employment. Even if you don’t have to supply copies for certain applications, it is helpful to have the information on hand to make filling out the forms easier.

3. Recommendations. Just like the approval process to get into a college, you will need to have a few recommendation letters for your financial aid package. This helps the loan committee know more about you and feel more comfortable in making their decision. The letters should focus on your reliability and responsibility so that the company feels that you are a good risk.

4. Community service records. If you have been an active member of your committee, it is a good idea to include a log of all your community service. Again, this helps present a picture that you are a responsible adult who is going to pay back the loan.

5. A well written essay. You will need to have a well written essay about your decision to attend college and what you plan to achieve with your life. Make sure that it is polished and proof read by another person to ensure that there are not any mistakes that you may have missed.
