Scholarship Success Secrets

Trying to get a scholarship can be very nerve racking. It is incredibly competitive and one small mistake can make a big difference in your future. Here are some tips on how you can be successful in obtaining a scholarship.

1. Target your opportunity. There are thousands of different types of scholarships. Many of these are highly specialized for different areas of study or for different kinds of people. Before you apply for any scholarship, make sure that you fit all of the requirements. Trying to fake it will not get you anywhere. It is better to send out a few targeted applications than to waste your time on dozens of applications for scholarships that are not meant for your area of study.

2. Follow their directions exactly. If you want to make a good impression on a scholarship committee, you will need to follow their directions to the letter. Take the time to read, and then re-read the application to ensure that you completely understand it. If copies of documents are needed, include them with the application and make sure that they are easy to read. If the application says that responses must be typed, then find a way to type them in, even if it means borrowing an old fashioned typewriter.

3. The early bird gets the worm. You have a better chance of getting a scholarship if you apply early. There are set deadlines for every scholarship and those who submit their applications first are usually considered first. This can mean that the committee will choose one of the early submissions and stop the consideration process entirely. You owe it to yourself to have your application at the top of the pile.

4. Keep applying. If you don’t win a scholarship the first time around, keep going after it. Your chances of being approved will increase and you’ll have more opportunities to get used to filling out applications. By then, you’ll already know what they need and it won’t take any time to fill it out again.

5. Cast a wide loop. Don’t pin all of your hopes on one scholarship. Apply for as many scholarships as you can, so long as you meet their requirements. You can never have too much money for your education. In fact, by combining several small scholarships you can do better than you can with one large one.
