How to Write Essay for Scholarships

When a student first applies for an scholarship or grant, sometimes the application process calls for an essay to be written about a certain subject so that the granters of he scholarship or grant can make a decision for who should be awarded the scholarship. There are a plethora of scholarships that require an essay. Sometimes when two students have the same GPA, the same civic and leadership resume, and the same ambitions, it is hard for the judges to make a reward of the money. Sometimes the essay is the tie breaker.

When writing an essay for a scholarship, you need to keep in mind the direction the judges want to go with it. For example, patriotism is a running theme in scholarship essay themes. When given the subject, you should address the positive aspect of the subject even though you might object of the concept completely. Only mention negative aspects as circumstances or outcomes of positive ones. Nobody wants to read an essay that will downgrade the very theme that the givers of the scholarship wants recognized.

Write passionately and keep the words reader friendly. Even though big words might impress some judges, most will be happy not to have to run and get a thesaurus or a dictionary. You can use complex concepts, but stay away from complex words. Be reader friendly when you write. Another hint is to make sure you use your own words. In an essay like this you want to use what you know and not quote or site a lot of words that are not your own. Never plagiarize and give credit where credit is due, but keep it at a minimum. The judges want to know what you think, not what someone else thinks.

Make sure that you edit and correct all mistakes in your scholarship essay. Have someone go over it and once corrected from their feedback, have two or three more people read and correct it. You want a flawless document that will jump off the paper and give you the edge over someone else trying for the same grant or scholarship. Avoid the use of slang, even if it common regionally. The judges may be a thousand miles away when they read it. Keep a copy on your essay electronically so that you can print it out. The same essay can be used several times in the attempt to secure a different scholarship.
