There aren't many prospective students that would turn down the opportunity to attend a college or university in the great state of Hawaii. Really, who would turn down that chance and miss out on the sun, waves, and incredible beaches that Hawaii is famous for? Talk about the perfect college experience.
So how does an individual manage to finance their way over to the big island? Face facts, it's not exactly cheap. Just going on vacation in Hawaii can cost a small fortune; how much would it be to actually live there while attending college? Even resident students face the challenge of finding a way to finance their college education. So what, if any, programs does Hawaii offer to both instate as well as out of state students for college?
Hawaii does not shrug off the need for higher education in their state and in turn offers a variety of different options for financial aid. Like many, Hawaii offers various need based programs such as the Hawaii State Incentive Grant. With this program it is required that the applicant be a state resident as well as fill out the FASFA form in order to apply. This program is offered to students who are also receiving the Pell Grant.
Another need based program is the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship which is offered by various states including Hawaii. This program focuses on students who are at the top of their class. This is a federally funded program that awards money to only those who have demonstrated the highest academic achievement. Recipients of this scholarship may apply to the college or university of their choice throughout the United States. This makes it possible for non residents to secure some funding to attend a Hawaiian college or University. Another great factor about the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship is that it will renew for the amount of three years.
For those students who don't necessarily meet the guidelines for the need based programs offered, there are other options, especially for those interested in attending the University of Hawaii. The University of Hawaii oversees a variety of their own scholarships which they offer to various students in different stages of their college career. They present quite a variety of scholarships in the following categories such as first year students; students continuing their studies; international students; merit based scholarships; and a Presidential level scholarship. The values of these scholarships vary anywhere from $1000 to $5000 for qualifying applicants.
