What You Need to Ask Your Guidance Counselor

Before you even begin the process of applying to colleges, it is important to discuss your future with your high school guidance counselor. They will be able to help you build a comprehensive plan for your future and can be terrific sounding boards when you get a little frustrated. Here are a few important questions that you will need to ask your counselor during this process.

1. What should I be doing to prepare for college? You will need to find out what extracurricular activities will be most beneficial for you. Whether it is volunteering in your community or special books that will help you prepare, there are numerous ways that you can get ready for your college education. Ask them to supply you with a reading list to help you be more prepared for your entrance exams.

2. What kind of courses should I be taking? Your guidance counselor will be able to help you pick the right courses so that you will be prepared for college. You will need to share with them what you think you would like to do with your life so that they have a good basis to start offering advice. Whether you need a certain amount of hours in one subject or you could benefit from taking some extra courses, they’ll be able to help you make the right decisions.

3. Do they know of any available scholarships? There are thousands of different kinds of scholarships that are available. Guidance counselors are usually in touch with foundations and schools so they know which scholarships you may qualify for. This will help you get prepared early on and make the application process a lot easier.

4. Ask them to go over your transcript with you. Spotting trouble early on is vital. Ask your guidance counselor to review your school transcript. You’ll have a better idea of the courses you need to focus on and what areas can use improvement. If they won’t share the transcript directly with you, ask them to read it and make recommendations on what you can do to improve your performance.

5. Can they help you prepare for your entrance exams? Counselors will typically have access to books that will help you prepare for your ACT and entrance exams. Ask them for recommendations on what books they prefer for test preparation and study.
