The Junior Years: How to Prepare For College

Once you’ve entered your junior year in high school, you are probably starting to feel the pinch. Your grades may have caught up with you at this point and college seems a lot closer than it once did. There are still plenty of chances to further your education at this point, but it is really time to start buckling down.

1. Start narrowing down your list of schools. By now, you should have an idea of which schools you would like to attend. Make a list of the top ten contenders and then make the time to visit them if possible. Learn all you can about these schools and start making friends with students there. This will give you an inside look of what the school is like and will help you make an informed decision.

2. Start seriously focusing on a major. By now, after your sophomore year, you should have a good idea of where your life is taking you. If you have changed your mind on the majors you were interested in, now is the time to start adding courses that reflect this change. Check with your guidance counselor to see what advice they have for you on the majors you have chosen.

3. Stay focused. After two years of hard work on your grades, now is not the time to let them slip. You can still make up for lost times if your grades weren’t the best, but you don’t want to slack off. Stay involved with school and community activities. These really do matter when it comes to applying for schools. Keep informed and well read, and keep practicing your ACT test. It will pay off shortly.

4. Start applying for schools. It is never too early to start applying for the schools of your choice. The top schools are incredibly competitive and you will need to get your application in as soon as possible. After you have narrowed down your list, see what their application process looks like and get yours in as soon as possible. This will help you move your application to the top of the pile.

Many people look at their junior year as their last year of fun before they buckle down. However, this attitude can make it even harder to catch up during your last year. Stay focused and stay on track.
