A student in college has traditionally struggled in most case in providing themselves the basic creature comforts such as food and shelter. The idea the college student live on pasta products and catsup has some ring of truth in it. College kids without the support of their parents do struggle and most have to find a job to balance out the responsibilities of their class work and their need to feed themselves and keep a roof over their head.
Scholarships and grants can help relieve some of the pressure that a college student has. They will pay for tuition and books, and a little will be left over to help pay for rent and food. The residual usually is not very much and the student may find them selves short by the end of the semester. A part time job can eliminate this short coming and could offer the student more than just money.
A part time job on the campus is a good idea. The student could work around their school schedule and still be on campus. The pay on a college campus is not much, but the convenience of working in the same place that you go to school is a plus. Sometimes, according to what kind of job you get, the academics can tie in and the student could get some sort of academic credit for fulfilling the job. This is most common in the science discipline.
A part time job off campus could pay more but the student would have to deal with transportation. The management of the off campus job site might not be so forgiving about school schedules and study conflicts. The student needs to fully explain to the potential employer that school is the first priority and if there is a conflict, school comes firs. Most employers in a college town will understand this, but many will not. It is up to the student to communicate this during the initial interview.
The hours of the part time job are also a consideration that must be reviewed. If the hours conflict with sleeping time and the student has trouble concentrating in class, the student needs to find a more suitable job. The cost of college is expensive and a failed class because of lack of sleep could have the student retake the class again. This means that the grade point average will lower and the student will have to pay for the class again.
