When a student is in high school, the last thing that they want to do is take harder courses than they are taking right now. No high school student wants to push themselves unless they are in a gifted program. Most attitudes exist that high school should be easy and that the students will get their core classes in college. This is true in some cases, but if the student wants to get ahead of the curve, advance placement classes will help.
Advance placement classes are classes that highly qualified teachers teach to service those students that have above average talents in the realm of academics. The advance placement class will challenge those students and give them an opportunity to experience freshman level content and assignments. There is more pressure placed on these students and their success in the class can warrant a better college resume.
When college recruiters look at a transcript, the notice of an advance placement class or two will turn their head. They will know that this student has passed a course that is taught and structured the same as a college class. This will let the recruiter know that the student has some level of academic maturity and that their success will be easier to predict than the student who took only the basic requirements in high school.
The advance placement class will take time out of the social life of the student. There is extra and supplemental reading, longer and more detailed assignments, and the assessments are more rigorous and depends on more outside of the box thinking than a traditional class. The teacher puts more demands on the student and the student is expected to work independently with the materials.
The advantage of this type of class is to prepare the student for the rigors of college courses. The student has to develop independent study skills and be able to absorb an array of materials. The course will give the student enough background to take a college course in the same subject. This will allow the student have a reasonable chance of achieving success and a passing grade in that course.
Advanced placement classes give a potential college student an advantage over the traditional college student. Preparation, study skills, and time management are in stilled in these classes. These attributes are a recipe for the success of the student both academically and personally.
